Foodbowl Music Festival
In 2008, a group of young people in the north of the state set out to bring a slice of the good life home. The result was the inaugural Foodbowl Music Festival, held in Numurkah, the heart of the state’s food producing region.
Dissatisfied with the ‘big dollars for big names’ formula familiar to many established festivals, they chose performers from a wide variety of musical backgrounds from across the state, whose performance skills suited the small, intimate, historical venues that abound in the northern flatlands. What ensued surprised everyone. A relaxed, family friendly weekend-long celebration where fine local food and original music complemented what was hiding in Numurkah all along – a peaceful rural community rich in history, with a taste for the good life that could not be shadowed by modernity or drought.
Now in its third year, the Foodbowl Music Festival has earned a reputation for showcasing quality, authentic music with a wide appeal. Musicians are described less as ‘folk’, but rather as ‘good folk’. And of course a drop of local wine, a wedge of cheese and freshly picked seasonal produce is never far away, with meals and markets organised to showcase exactly that.
What is unique to the Foodbowl is less the substance and program of events, but rather the intangible spaces between. Punters are as likely to encounter a friendly face on stage as they are in the street. The Foodbowl is a slice of tree-change without the need to shift your house. The people of Numurkah look forward to sharing the third Foodbowl Music Festival with you from October 15, 2010.
